Cosatu relieved that Secrecy Bill’s deadline is extended

Cosatu has expressed relief that ANC members of Parliament have decided to extend the 24 June deadline for the drafting of the Protection of Information Bill.

The trade union federation hopes the extra time will be used to re-examine the problematic clauses.

Cosatu says the parliamentary committee needs in particular to give attention to the genuine concerns of civil society that provisions in the so-called Secrecy Bill could be abused to cover up crime, corruption and the misuse of funds by allowing officials to classify evidence as secret.

The African Christian Democratic Party spokesperson Steve Swart said it seemed the ANC may be bowing to pressure from alliance partner Cosatu which is opposing the bill.
