The Department of International Relations and Cooperation says Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has promised to help with the recovery of photojournalist Anton Hammerl’s remains.
This came after President Jacob Zuma held talks with Gaddafi in Tripoli on yesterday.
Hammerl was reportedly shot by Libyan forces last month.
His family only found out about his death this month, after 75 days of agony.
Hammerl’s family pleaded with the president before he left for Libya to help them bring his remains to South Africa for a proper burial.
Meanwhile, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane says repatriating Anton Hammerl’s remains will not be an easy task.
Responding to questions in the National Assembly, the Minister said no effort would be spared in trying to bring Hammerl’s body back to his family.
