Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele says crime on trains and at stations has dropped by more than a third over the past two years.
This includes murders and rapes.
In reply to a parliamentary question, Ndebele quoted statistics from the records of the Passenger Rail Agency of SA's security arm and the SA Railway Police.
The Minister says more than 6 500 security officers are deployed on trains or in stations in Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
