The Sobahlangula Human Rights Champions said it will intensify its boycott of the increase of the Metrorail ticket prices.  Metrorail increased ticket fares as of the 1st of July contributing the increase to operational costs.

Sobahlangula Human Rights Champions Secretary General Mandisi Mrwebi said it is important to understand that the poor which are the unemployed cannot be rejected or excluded.

Mrewbi said the metro rail and management continue to ignore us as we’ve noticed from the response they have given us.

Mrwebi said they gave us a correspondence that they were sending to minister even though we proposed a different proposal from the one COSATU proposed as when we addressed it was coming from COSATU and not Metro rail.

“We reject the correspondents as they must take into account the unemployed when they make ticket increases Mrwebi added.

Meanwhile the organisation said they are also against the expansion of the MyCiti rapid bus service to Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain.

Sobahlangula Human Rights Champions Secretary General Mandisi Mrwebi said the service will exclude 144 000 plus people of Khayelitsha who will never afford the R16.50 fare per trip to or from the city centre.

Mrwebi said the nature of my citi is the same as that of metro rail the prices are very high they don’t have any consideration for the unemployed.

“We want to pledge and add all our people to understand that the metro rail and my citi have an obligation to serve the poor and unemployed Mrwebi added.
