Fund to support spaza shops, announced

Spaza shop and food handling businesses that applied to register their businesses with their local municipalities but were awaiting their registration outcomes will not be penalised. So says Small Business Development Minister Stella Ndabeni, who briefed media on Sunday on last Friday’s spaza shop and food outlet registration deadline.

The announcement comes after several incidents of food poisoning and deaths related to the foodborne illnesses were reported across South Africa

Ndabeni clarified that reaching the deadline for the registration period does not necessarily mean that the problems and challenges of compliance by spaza shops and food handling outlets are over. She says nor does it mean that the sector is now fully regulated to adhere to the laws

Ndabeni announced the creation of a R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund that aims to enhance market competitiveness to help spaza shops and food handling outlets compete with larger retailers. She says provincial and local government will facilities awareness campaigns in all districts and metros across South Africa, for the month of March, but stressed it will also continue beyond this month
