Durban’s Star College staff arrived at the school on Wednesday to find that two prefabricated classrooms, which were used to write exams, had been burnt.
Police spokesperson superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said there is a belief that the fire may have been an attempt at postponing the exams, and a case of arson is being investigated.
Faruk Türkmen, the school’s principal, said matric exams were written in one of the classrooms, Independent Online reports.
No one was in the building at the time the incident occurred. Türkmen said he thinks the cause of the fire was an electrical fault. The building was more than 10 years old, and no other damage to the school was caused by the fire.
