Three policemen based at the Delft police station were arrested on two separate charges of defeating the ends of justice.

“The first incident relates to a 43-year-old Inspector who was arrested on Wednesday evening at the Delft police station, following an investigation that was launched last week relating to the alleged irregular release of a murder suspect from police custody,” says police spokesperson Billy Jones.

This particular suspect was arrested and held in police custody for the alleged fatal stabbing of a 33 year-old man in Belhar last week. The suspect was allegedly released by the inspector before the investigation was launched to charge him. Detectives are still searching for this suspect as he could be connected to the alleged murder incident.

“The second incident relates to two detectives (a 44 year-old Superintendent and a 40 year-old Inspector) who were arrested on Thursday afternoon at the police station as well, on a charge of defeating the ends of justice,” says Jones.

The arrests of the two relates to the alleged irregular conduct in processing a criminal case-docket, which resulted in no proper investigation and the failure to prosecute a potential suspect. This attempted murder shooting incident took place in Belhar over the past weekend.

“These arrests form part of our ongoing investigations in ridding police stations of alleged criminal elements. We are also in the process of instituting departmental disciplinary action against these members,” says Jones.

The policemen are scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
