The Agreement on Occupational Specific Dispensation is in full swing for nurses as agreed upon by the Health Department with all five admitted trade unions in the Public Health and Social Development Sectoral Bargaining Council.

This comes after the OSD agreement was signed by the health sector unions in September 2007 due to a meeting on how resources for improvement of working conditions for nurses should be used.

The five trade unions are DENOSA, NEHAWU, PSA, HOSPERSA and NUPSAW.

“All 100 000 nurses employed by government are expected to benefit from the implementation of the OSD before March 31,2008,” says Department of Health spokesperson, Sibani Mngadi.

According to Mngadi all parties agreed that there would be two phases to the salary adjustments.

“As part of phase one, entry level salaries for Staff Nurses are being increased by 20% whereas for Nursing Assistants and Professional Nurses in general have both been increased by 24%,” says Mngadi.

Thus far the Limpopo and Northern Cape Health Departments have completed implementation with the rest of the provinces currently in progess.
