The Department of Foreign Affairs says that five South Africans have been evacuated successfully from Chad to Gabon by the French military.
“The five were evacuated as part of an agreement between the South African government and French authorities to evacuate South Africans from Chad alongside other foreign nationals,” says Spokesperson for the Department, Ronnie Mamoepa.
Mamoepa says four other South Africans are going to be evacuated later on Tuesday. The three other South Africans are said to be safe inside their homes in N’Djamena.
“The three are in contact with the South African Charge d’ Affaires in Chad, Gert Du Preez and their employers. Two more South Africans have been located in the South and the East of Chad and require no evacuation at this stage,” says Mamoepa.
He added that the Department of Foreign Affairs would do everything in its power to locate any other South Africans that might be in Chad.
