The City of Cape Town says that they have been successful in arresting ten people for the theft of the stolen Robbie Waterwitch and Coline Williams statues.
“Yesterday the Copper Theft Task Team in conjunction with the SAPS arrested another seven criminals that are linked to the theft of the two statues in Athlone,” says City spokesperson Pieter van Dalen.
Three suspects were previously arrested after pieces of the statues were recovered last Friday at a scrap dealer who made contact with the Copperheads.
“We’ve seized two cars that (were) also involved in the activity. This has been a big syndicate that has been operating in that area and surrounds for a long time,” says van Dalen.
He describes the arrests as a major breakthrough in relation to similar crimes that is being committed in the community. “This will have an effect on the crime statistics for that area,” explained van Dalen.
