April 10th marks the death of Chris Hani, one of the fiercest opponents of the apartheid regime. He was killed 15 years ago as he left his as he left his car in Boksburg. Hani’s assassination was seen as one of the turning points in the process towards democracy in South Africa.
Hani was the leader of the South African Communist Party.
He had also been the head of the militant wing of the ANC. He was a popular leader and a passionate speaker. Many saw his killing as part of a plot to kill off top anti-apartheid leaders. His death led to rioting in 1993 which kick-started negotiations toward democratic elections which took place the following year.
Hani was best known for his strong militant stand against apartheid. He is also remembered for his ability to appeal to the people through simple messages about socialism, such as the need for decent shelter, water and health care for everyone. He also believed in improving the lives of all working people. Hani was just 51 when he died. He had been seen as one of the possible leaders of a free South Africa. A memorial service to commemorate his death was held Thursday morning in Boksburg.
