The public has been warned and consumers could be penalised for excessive electricity usage. This warning came from government after finding that South Africans are not doing enough to conserve energy.

“The government says some electricity saving targets have been reached, but the South African public is still lagging behind industry in terms of its ability to reduce its electricity demands. Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa said in Pretoria, residential areas were not achieving the required savings. The public have been encouraged to limit their electricity usage by investing in a number of energy efficient technologies, such as geyser blankets, energy saving light bulbs and solar energy.
