On Wednesday 30 July 2008 Johannes Mowers was found guilty and was sentenced to direct imprisonment on 28 criminal charges.
Mowers was on the run from authorities for three years and was arrested by police in March last year. One of his victims, a minor was abducted from her parents' home in the Diepgat Farm in December 2005 and held in an underground hideaway in Hemel en Aarde Valley in Hermanus.
Western Cape Regional Communications Manager Sandy Godlwana says, the Western Cape Directorate of Public Prosecutions has welcome the conviction and sentencing of Johannes Moewer, his affective sentence will be that of life imprisonment for the rape of a minor who he abducted and as well as 211 years for 26 other crimes as a result of the plea and sentence agreement, the victims of the offence was also spared the trauma of having to give evidence in the court.
“The director of public prosecutions advocate Rodney de Kock commends members of the South African Police Service for working tirelessly in tracking down the perpetrator of these crimes.”says Godlwana.
This sends out a loud and clear message that the NPA ensures justice for the victims of crime by prosecuting without fear, favour and prejudice. By working with partners and the public to solve and prevent crime.
