Former United Nations secretary general chief Kofi Annan has accused rich countries of reneging on promises to help feed the world's hungry.

Speaking on World Food Day, Annan said wealthy nations should not use the global financial crisis as a pretext for not meeting their commitments.

It is reported that his comments were echoed by Pope Benedict, who blamed world hunger partly on the egoism of nations.

Aid agency Oxfam say more than 900 million people are facing starvation because of soaring prices and Annan points out that ten thousand children are dying from malnutrition every day.

Meanwhile the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa notes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, today.

DENOSA also agrees with the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan when he said that “together, we can make real and sufficient progress towards the end of poverty.” Indeed this struggle against poverty requires a collective effort.

DENOSA Communications Officer Asanda Fongqo says poverty is the violation of human rights and people if they are not eating well will be sick .He added that they are calling on government to do something to eradicate poverty.
