The City of Cape Town plans to invest more than R10 million over the next two years to establish a fully equipped dog unit to address drug related crime within the Cape metropole.
“This narcotics dog unit will build on the successes of the City’s recently formed Substance Abuse Unit - also known as the “Drug Busters”, in combating drug houses and illegal shebeens,” said the City’s Glen Kleinsmith
“We intend having 30 trained and fully equipped dogs and handlers by the year 2011. The 500 percent increase in drug related crimes in Cape Town over the past seven years is one of the biggest social crisis we face as a city,” said Kleinsith
“The aim of this advanced unit of sniffer dogs is to bust the drug scene and bring to justice those responsible for degrading the city and endangering the lives of our citizens,” said Kleinsmith
