The Democratic Alliance says it has achieved its three objectives in the election.
The party’s chief executive officer Ryan Coetzee says it managed to keep the African National Congress below a two-thirds majority, it won an outright majority in the Western Cape and it strengthen its position as the official opposition.
The DA increased its seats in Parliament by 17 to 67. It also grew in eight out of nine provinces, increasing its seats in provincial legislatures from 51 to 65.
But Coetzee admits that the DA’s greatest challenge going forward is to win more support from black South Africans.
