Cape Town metro police have closed the N2 highway near Khayelitsha after hundreds of protestors burnt tyres and hurled stones at cars.
It is not yet clear whether the protest were angry about service delivery or if the protest was linked to the truck drivers’ strike which has disrupted fuel deliveries to some filling stations.
Police said they were force to fire rubber bullets into the crowd to diffuse tensions.
The road was reopened to traffic after the fire brigade and traffic officials cleared the road.
