The official announcement of the party lists for the Western Cape Provincial Legislature stated that Alderman Helen Zille has ceased to be a councillor of the City of Cape Town and will soon be taking up her position in the Provincial Legislature.

Alderman Dirk Smit says Executive Deputy Mayor, Councillor Grant Haskin, is now the Acting Executive Mayor until a new Executive Mayor is elected at a Special Council Meeting.

Councillor Haskin has re-appointed the existing members of the Mayoral Committee who will serve until the new Executive Mayor appoints his/her Mayoral Committee.

The Chairperson of Council and Speaker, Alderman Dirk Smit says, in accordance with article 55 of the Structures Act no 117 of 1998, intends calling a Special Council Meeting for Wednesday, 13 May to elect a new Executive Mayor.

“At the meeting, councillors will submit written nominations for the position of Executive Mayor and the election will be conducted by secret ballot.”
