Former Kwa-Zulu Natal premier and current Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele is expected to be installed as Chancellor of the University of Zululand in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Ndebele succeeds the former Chancellor, President Jacob Zuma, whose two terms expired last year.
The minister adds to the long list of politicians who have accepted such positions at universities.
Early in the year deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe accepted a post as chancellor at the University of Venda.
In a statement his department says Ndebele is honoured on his appointment.
“The Minister is both deeply humbled and honoured by the University of Zululand's Council decision to appoint him as the new Chancellor,” the statement says.
The installation ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday and will see members of the University Council, Senate, Student Representative Council, students, government, labour and business leaders in attendance.
