Congress of South African Trade Unions says it plans to urge employers and business owners to close for business on lunch time to enable workers to participate in the opening of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The union federation in the Western Cape says this is done in order for workers to travel to their destinations in time to see the opening ceremony and the opening game of Bafana Bafana.

Provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich says they will formally approach employers to close companies at 1pm and that arrangements be made to work in the lost time if need be.

“This World Cup is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we need to ensure that the opportunity is available for all South Africans to enjoy,” Ehrenreich said.

Ehrenreich adds that where arrangements are in place with workplace management they will continue.

The opening match for the soccer tournament starts at 4pm at Soccer City in Johannesburg between South Africa and Mexico and later France faces Uruguay at the Cape Town Stadium.
