The National Education Health & Allied Workers Union(NEHAWU) has slammed the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) for what it calls the blatant misuse of funds designated for the provision of medical care for members of the scheme on 25 World Cup tickets.
In a statement, the Union calls on the Minister of Public Service and Administration to “deal decisively with the management of the GEMS as this constitutes fruitless expenditure of State resources”.
It adds that although GEMS is managed as a private entity reporting to the Minister, the “bureaucrats need to know that those funds belong to the taxpayers who make personal payments and through state contributions”.
In the statement, the union calls for an immediate reimbursement to the public and urges the minister to take action against anyone who may have acted inappropriately.
“The union finds it totally unacceptable that the workers are being told to accept lower wages because of the unavailability of money yet we see a select few senior government and government parastatal’s fat cats enjoying themselves at the taxpayers’ expense. We will totally oppose and fight this hypocrisy,” the statement concluded.
