Ivory Coast brought in Gervais Kouassi up front after Didier Drogba was declared unfit for the Group G encounter with Portugal being played in Port Elizabeth at the moment.
The African Elephants’ star was not ready to play after earlier breaking his arm, despite Fifa giving him permission to play in a light cast.
Portugal was impressive in the first few minutes, but the score board remained empty early in the game. Ronaldo was one of the players given a yellow card.
Earlier, New Zealand got their first ever World Cup point after a last minute equaliser by defender Winston Reid brought the score against Slovakia to 1-1.
The All Whites were trailing for the bulk of the match, and appeared outplayed until an all out attack in the dying minutes.
Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg erupted as Reid knocked in the goal. All the teams in group F now sit on one point, with Italy and Paraguay also registering a draw in Cape Town last night.
