14 July 2010
The 18th of July is declared as Nelson Mandela International Day.
This day marks the important contribution he made to create peace in South Africa and the world.
It’s also about recognising his contribution to resolving conflicts and promoting race relations, human rights and reconciliation.
The Department of Arts and Culture have a number of activities lined up for the day.
The department will be distributing books to different libraries and schools in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape.
This day will also help the department to highlight career opportunities in the arts, culture and the heritage sector.
On Sunday which is Madiba’s 92nd birthday there will be national celebrations which will be in Mvezo in the Eastern Cape, and President Jacob Zuma will lead the celebrations.
We are all encouraged to help celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday and remember the work that this amazing world icon has done for this country and the world.
