Another mineworker has lost his life earlier today at Goldfields ‘s Driefontein mine outside Carletonville.
The accident took place at No. 1 shaft when a loco driver was pressed by a box front shutter against the loco. He died on the scene.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have passed its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and calls on the industry to reprioritize safety at a time when some mines have decided to contest safety measurers in the name of production.
The NUM has noted that the Chamber of Mines has been in the news talking about progress of the last ten years when it is far away from its target of zero mine accidents.
They’ve also noted with shock Aquarius Platinum‘s shameless stance of crying foul over production when five families and hundreds of accompanying breadwinners have lost their loved ones.
The NUM supports the Department of Mineral Resources in ensuring that companies do not get away with murder.
