The Metro Police have arrested 27 suspects for drunken driving, possession of narcotics to assaulting a police officer and other offences over the weekend in the Western Cape.

About 235 traffic fines were issued during various roadblocks held in the city.

Deputy Chief, Yolande Faro said, “We will not allow the lives and property of innocent and law abiding citizens and visitors to this city be compromised during the coming festive season.”

Faro said that “in view of the current scourge of gangster activity in Hanover Park, the Metro Police has deployed a dedicated team to the area to combat this evil that is busy ruining innocent lives.

“There primary focus will be on high visibility patrols, including stop and searches and the execution of search warrants,” she said.

Six suspects were arrested during raids on two alleged drug houses in Hanover Park. The six were charged with possession of narcotics and ammunition.

“We are in the process of finalising our deployment strategy and we endeavour to be more stringent when conducting Traffic and By-law enforcement as well as crime prevention operations in the following weeks,” she said.
