Bertha Mashaba Gxowa who is the National Treasurer of the Women's League of the African National Congress has passed away this morning.
She died in the Sunninghill Hospital in Sandton due to a medical complication.
Bertha Gxowa was born on the 28 November 1934, in Germiston Location where she spent her early childhood. She went to school at the Thokoza primary School and then the Public Secondary School, both in the location.
Bertha started her working life, working as an office assistant for the South African Clothing Workers’ Union.
She signed up the ANC youth league during the anti-Bantu education campaign strengthened her involvement in politics.
She became a founder member of the Federation of South African Women, which organized the historic women’s march against pass laws in 1956.
She was a Member of Parliament and Committee Member of the Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs. She joined the African National Congress 59-years-ago.
ANC Spokesperson Brian Sokutu said “She endure hardship in the hands of apartheid, she will be missed by all”.
