The Congress of South African Trade Unions has expressed shock at recent reports that 16 Chinese workers have been arrested for working illegally for a Chinese company which has a R2.9 billion subcontract from Cell C to build its high-speed 4G network.
“The federation says it is concerned that this may be just the tip of the iceberg of international labour broking in South Africa”, Cosatu said in a statement.
The Home Affairs Department allegedly inspected work permits at the ZTE Corporation's premises in Durban on Thursday, after receiving a complaint about the validity of permits for workers from China.
As a result, Chinese workers were detained in Durban for allegedly having invalid work permits.
