The annual report of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services yesterday carried shocking relations that angered Members of Parliament.
Girls who are awaiting sentencing in Thohoyandou are locked up like animals in the heat of a “converted” storeroom and strip naked to survive conditions.
It has been reported that the only relief the girls, aged between 18 and 21 years, can get from the heat is by taking their clothes off because there are not enough windows.
As the country enters the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, prison authorities have been given 24 hours to come up with an alternative for these unacceptable conditions.
