Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has welcomed the Congress of South African Trade Union’s stand on the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act.
Ndebele says the Department of Transport has long been engaging and will continue to engage with all stakeholders regarding the implementation of AARTO.
He added that as government, they welcome partnerships with various formations including organized labour, business, the religious community and civil society to end the killing on South African roads.
The Aarto system penalises drivers with demerit points for traffic offences.
Once a driver has 12 demerit points, his or her driver's licence gets suspended for three months.
A driver's licence gets cancelled on the third suspension.
