The Hawks arrested a Thai national, alleged to be a leading figure in the illicit trade in rhino horn internationally, at his house in Edenvale, Johannesburg this morning.
The arrest follows an extensive investigation by the South African Revenue Service.
The suspect allegedly obtained rhino hunting permits under false pretences.
Once the animals were killed on supposed trophy hunting trips, the man is suspected of sending the rhino horns abroad. He apparently paid about 65-thousand-Rands per kilogram for the horn.
