Courts in England have sat through the night to deal with criminal charges from four nights of looting and rioting in several cities.

In London many of the accused are thought to have been remanded on bail with curfews.

Extra court sittings were being arranged elsewhere as Prime Minister David Cameron gave police permission to use stronger tactics against rioters, including the use of water cannon.

More than 1 100 suspects have been arrested so far.

A large police presence and heavy downpours helped deter looters and vandals from returning to the streets of places like Manchester last night.
