Shell says hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the most environmentally friendly way of unlocking the vast gas reserves of the Karoo.
The company’s Jan Willem Eggink told the Cape Town Press Club today that despite being new to South Africa, fracking is a method of shale gas extraction that has been safely used around the world for more than 60 years.
Government recently placed a moratorium on gas and oil exploration in the Karoo in response to significant public outcry.
Eggink says the company has every intention of properly consulting with landowners in the area and compensating them accordingly.
