The Dalai Lama has cancelled a planned trip to South Africa after government’s failure to grant him a visa in time.
The Tibetan spiritual leader had been invited to attended Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s 80th birthday party later this week.
The Dalai Lama’s offices in India issued a statement saying the exiled Nobel Peace Prize laureate had been due to leave for South Africa on Thursday.
The Desmond Tutu Peace Centre says the cancellation signals a dark day for all of South Africa.
The chief executive of the Centre, Nomfundo Wazala, says the Dalai Lama clearly did not wish to inconvenience the South African government with his visa application any longer.
