Grade one and two pupils countrywide can expect to spend 30 minutes more in their classrooms each day next year.
Spokesperson for the basic education ministry Hope Mokgatlhe says the longer day will be introduced mainly to accommodate the teaching of a second language in Grade One.
English will be introduced at that level.
For some schools in the Western Cape, Afrikaans will be the first additional language taught.
