Suspended police Chief Bheki Cele will not be paying his own legal fees in the defamation lawsuit he has launched against The Sowetan.
The case dates back to July 2007.
The newspaper published a manipulated satirical photograph of him.
The KwaZulu-Natal transport department has confirmed that the legal costs will be paid by the taxpayer as Cele had still been a MEC in the province at the time.
