The Cape Town Chamber of Commerce's Michael Bagraim says Metrorail’s national fare increase, reported to be 27-percent, will force passengers to travel with private vehicles instead of public transport.
Metrorail blames the hike on increasing electricity prices, labour costs and vandalism.
Bagraim says this doesn’t bode well for employers, who cannot afford wage increases either.
The increase could eventually give rise to unrest in the workplace.
