Uniforms for prisoners awaiting trial will cost the state nearly R40 million.
Correctional services minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said in response to a parliamentary question from the ANC MP Winnie Ngwenya 100 000m of material had already been bought for the manufacturing of the uniforms.
The rest of the material will be bought in the new financial year.
Mapisa-Nqakula added that Article 49 of the Correctional Matters Amendment Bill would only be promulgated after the uniform manufacturing process was finished.
