President Jacob Zuma says young people should be encouraged to play chess because it could help them with their schoolwork.

Zuma, who is known to be a frequent chess player, met the former world champion of chess Gary Kasparov in Pretoria today.

The Russian player met Zuma to discuss chess programmes that will be started all over the country.

Kasparov says he aims to establish Johannesburg as the base for these programmes which will extend throughout the continent.
