Public hearings will be conducted before a decision is taken on whether or not 27 schools will be closed in the Western Cape.
Provincial MEC Donald Grant says the relevant school governing bodies have been notified of the possible closure and have until tomorrow to make written and oral submissions.
Grant says some of the reasons for considering schools for closure include poor learner attendance and low pass rates.
Public hearings on the possible closure of the schools will start in September.
