The Nicaraguan government says about three-thousand people are being evacuated from areas near the San Cristobal volcano which is spewing ash and gas.

The volcano, northwest of the capital Managua, began erupting yesterday morning shortly after powerful explosions were heard.

Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo says they expect more gas emissions and sporadic explosions.

She says the explosions could end up affecting 20-thousand local people.
