Public protector Thuli Madonsela on Friday said South Africa is in serious trouble, when it comes to governance.

Madonsela was speaking at a press briefing  in Johannesburg where President Jacob Zuma and his government faced some blistering criticism.

Madonsela said in some cases the state is being robbed blind through corruption.

Cosatu secretary general Zwelenzima Vavi called on the ANC to return to its former glory and encouraged people to take a stand.

Madonsela also added that her investigation into President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla residence is continuing with full force.

She said her office is working alongside the state's investigation into the Nkandla upgrades.

According to reports, over R200 million was spent on upgrades to the president’s private residence in KwaZulu-Natal.

Earlier in November, Zuma told Parliamentarians that the Public Works Department was only funding security upgrades to his home.

He added that his family took out a bond to pay for the rest of the renovations.
