Fake bank notes featuring an image of former president Nelson Mandela have hit the streets barely a fortnight after the new notes started circulating.

South African Reserve Bank spokesperson Hlengani Mathebula confirmed that the central bank had received reports of the fake notes.

Mathebula encouraged members of the public and business owners to familiarise themselves with the security features of the new bank notes and to examine them to ensure that they are genuine before accepting them.

Mathebula said they are aware of three incidences of  R100 notes, which happenned to be  photocopies.
“It is a poor attempt at counterfeiting, it has no security features on it, so people can easily be able to detect that it is a photocopy” he added.
