Cape Town Police today said a man was shot dead in a tussle between two police officers and a crowd in Bishop Lavis.

Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said the two officers were called out to Bishop Lavis on Sunday evening to investigate a shooting complaint.

Traut said on arrival the officers were ambush by the crowd and tried to rob them their firearms.

It is alleged that during the tussle between the police and the crowd a firearm went off, killing the 34 year old man.

Traut further said the two officers are recovering in hospital.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the incident.
