The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein has overturned murder charges against Jacob Humphreys, the taxi driver who ignored a safety barrier at a level crossing and resulted in ten children being killed.

He was sentenced to 20 years behind bars in the Western Cape High Court last year.

Western Cape MEC for Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle said he is disappointed at the reduce sentence and convictions.

Ministerial Spokesperson Sipheshile Dube Minister Carlisle noted that they will never change the reckless and irresponsible behavior in the road, unless the severe consequences are imposed by the court in those who kill.

Dube added that the minister respects the judgments delivered by The Supreme Court of Appeal and he believes that the consequences of murder of conviction and a 20 year jail sentence were appropriate.
