Today Western Cape MEC of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde delivered the provincial budget for 2013-2014.

The total funding for the budget has increased by R3.758 billion which includes additional funds towards provincial priorities which include education, health, job opportunities, infrastructure projects, broadband, skills development, green economy and socio-economic development projects.

Winde said that there are 576 000 individuals in the Western Cape who are unemployed, but are searching for work which is encouraging for him.

“We have got to put mechanisms in place specifically because we know that 70% of those people who are unemployed are under the age of 34” Winde added.

Winde reiterated that the department will continue to invest in mechanisms for youth to get ready for jobs; whether it is the youth wage subsidy or working skills programmes,or whether it’s looking at graduates to get them ready for the working world.
