The South African Teachers Union said schools cannot afford to keep up with the increasing electricity costs.

Last week the National Electricity Regulator of South Africa granted Eskom an 8 percent tariff hike for the next five years.

Eskom initially applied for a 16 percent increase.

Sadtu said several schools have approached the union about electricity costs.

Western Cape Department of Education Spokesperson Paddy Attwell said that they had one school that approached them last year for assistance regarding an Eskom bill however thy do know that schools are struggling to pay their bills and they are assisting schools in negotiations with local authorities where necessary, regarding bills.

Attwell adds that they have plans in place to equalise payments to the poorest schools to make it easier for them to cover their operating costs, including electricity bills.
