The Democratic Alliance has revealed that the Department of Basic Education has no mechanism in place to regularly monitor access to textbooks for all learners in the country.

DA Shadow Minister of Basic Education Annette Lovemore said she will be writing to the Chairperson of the Basic Education Portfolio Committee Hope Malgas requesting Minister Angie Mothsekga be summoned to Parliament to explain how she plans to monitor and improves access to textbooks for all learners in the country.

Lovemore explains further that the last time that the level of textbooks for every subject that they were studying was in 2011.

She added that she raised questions in parliament to Minister Angie Mothsekga about how many children have their own textbooks and the fact is she does not know.

“The figure she quotes are the 2011 figures and the fact is further that she has no targets that pertain to the delivery of textbooks to every single child for every single subject,” said Lovemore.
