New maternity ward at Hermanus Hospital brings huge improvements

The Hermanus Hospital received a newly built maternity ward this week. 

New areas will be occupied including radiology, a specialized out-patients department, a new emergency centre and a physical rehabilitation unit.

Western Cape Department of Health Spokesperson in the Winelands Jo-Anne Otto said the R70 million building project forms part of the capital expenditure projects to improve infrastructure of facilities in the province. 

The project is expected to be complete by September this year. 

Otto said that the new maternity ward at the Hermanus Hospital is a great improvement from thee old one which for many years formed part of the general ward and only had nine beds.

“The patients that were having babies then were also housed with patients who had been for surgery or were there because they had an illness and that however is not a good situation,” said Otto.

Otto adds that the new ward has 23 beds and the patients can now be separated and it also has a dedicated 4 bed kangaroo mother care unite
