A man was on Monday convicted and sentenced to 16 years in jail for raping a 15-year-old girl in Vryheid.

Mlungisi Mkhonza was arrested in January after he was on the run from authorities for a few months.

Kwa Zulu Natal Captain Thulani Zwane said it is alleged that the suspect approached a 16 year old victim who was walking to her house in December 2010 forced to a nearby bush where she was raped.

A case of rape was opened, through an investigation the accused was arrested and was charged for rape.
