The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works said vandalism has caused a delay of the second phase of the CCTV installment at the Buttskop level crossing in Blackheath.

The system was launched last month; this is after ten children died after a minibus taxi crashed into a train at the Buttskop level crossing in August 2010.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said they have had concerns in the past about vandalism of the infrastructure they are going to put up there.

“We have hopefully overcome those concerns now and are happy to have reached the stage where the cameras can go up.

“We have, together with Metrorail, trying our best to ensure security visibility to counteract any future vandalism” Dube added.
